Watergate

The Watergate scandal was the greatest Crisis besides the Civil War. the US had never lost a war before, and that loss was the start of a loss of confidence in the US. The Watergate scandal is a story of turmoil. And this event will eventually lead to the rejection of the US Constitution and founding principles. And the US took a completely new direction.

The Vietnam War was poorly managed, as well as not having clear objectives. The US had never lost an open war, and with Nixon as President people were quickly losing hope  of winning the war. People didn’t know what they were fighting for, they didn’t know why they were losing lives to this war. The war was portrayed very negatively by the Media, this resulted in many protests against the war. The US never really tried to win the war because they didn’t have any hope. The US doubted itself, which led to the victory of Vietnam. Eventually, Nixon decided to pull out the troops. Nixon was the first president to visit China. He sought to win them over with capitalism. Nixon gave up trying to fight the  communist and instead decided that  communism and capitalism would have to coexist.

There was a domestic change in the US there was a rejection of authority which led to the Hippie movement and rights for women, the NOW organization was  instituted,  as well as the Hispanic farmer movements and LGBT community movements, as well as The Endangered Species Act. There was a new left in America that birthed the self-hatred of  U.S. citizens that eventually led to the burning of the flag, and rejection of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. there was a deep loss of confidence and a growing bitterness in America. The Constitution was continuously weekend and was constantly being changed by every generation,  this nickname is the living Constitution.

Nixon created the silent majority with small counter movements. Nixon compromised with the communist, continued the growth of the government. He destroyed trust in the federal government. He was also associated with the Watergate scandal,  men who supported Nixon broke into the Watergate hotel and stole government documents, they had  why tapes the phones to find out whatever the Democratic candidates were planning. The men were later caught and Nixon tried to cover it up. His lies had gotten him into deeper trouble that he would have been in if he had just been honest.  set an ominous Source called Deep Throat slowly fed information to the Washington Post and exposed Nixon. The Oval Office had been recording conversations.  Once the tapes had been released, they had enough evidence to prove that Nixon had been covering up the Scandal. Nixon was going to be impeached however he decided to resign before the impeachment and  the vice president, Gerald Ford was sworn into office.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s political and cultural chaos in crisis had emerged. The war in Vietnam led to social and political turmoil. The nation had lost confidence and doubted the American Foundation of In God We Trust, E Pluribus Unum, and Liberty. The government began to have more power and influence over the nation. They had begun overriding State laws which led to U.S. corruption.
